    Overview

The Basic Setup screen is the first screen you see when you access the Router by typing its IP address into your web browser location window. You may configure the device and get it working properly using only the settings on this screen. For many users, all you need to do is give the device a name and select the Obtain an IP Address Automatically option.

Check the data provided by your ISP, to determine the correct connection method. Then select the appropriate method from the drop-down list, and enter the required data. After you have configured these settings, you should move on with the installation by setting a password and (optionally) setting up the DHCP server function of the router.

    General Settings
Host Name Make up a name for the device. This entry is necessary for some ISPs.
Domain Name Make up a name for the domain. This entry is necessary for some ISPs.
Firmware Version This entry shows the version of the firmware you are using.
LAN IP Address This is the IP Address and Subnet Mask of the router as it is seen by internal LAN users in your home or office. The default value is 192.168.1.1 for IP and 255.255.255.0 for Subnet Mask.
DNS Select the desired method to obtain the DNS (Domain Name Server) addresses.
    • Obtain DNS automatically - The DNS address is obtained from your ISP every time you connect.
    • Use these DNS - You must enter at least one DNS address in the fields provided. The 2nd and 3rd entries will be used only if the primary DNS is unavailable.
WAN connection Type Select the method used by your ISP:
    • Obtain an IP address automatically - Select this if your ISP provides an IP adress automatically, whenever you connect.
    • Static (fixed) IP address - Select this if your ISP has given you an IP address which never changed. This is most common on "always on" connections.
    • PPPoE - Select this if using a DSL modem, and your ISP provided some software as well as a "User name" and "password".
The screen will change when the method is changed, to display the required settings for the selected method. Click the link above for details of the settings for each method.

When finished, check all the values and click "Apply" to save the data. You can test and see if the settings are correct by connecting to the Internet. If you are using a Cable or DSL modem, reset your modem now.

Note: If your network is already running a DHCP server, you should disable the Router's DHCP server function (on the DHCP screen) in order to prevent possible conflicts.

    Obtain an IP address automatically

If using this method, no furter information is required. However, some ISPs require your to use a particular "Host Name" and/or "Domain Name".

Also, some ISPs may record your PC's MAC address. In this case, you must advise them that your MAC address is now the value displayed as the WAN connection Type MAC address.

    Static (fixed) IP address settings
